KABARNET: KABARNET HIGH SCHOOL DORMITORY SET ABLAZE

By Festus Kipchumba

Kabarnet High School's biggest and one of the oldest dormitories was this evening set on fire by unknown arsonists.

The Moi hostel was brought down by fire whose cause is yet to be ascertained but sources say that it might have been set ablaze by students who were not happy about the school's administration.

Police had to use tear gas to disperse the irate students who among them ran out of school to avoid being caught up by the anti-riot officers.

Some students have so far sustained minor injuries following the stampede.

The students reported back to school on Tuesday ago after the school was closed about a fortnight ago following an attempt to burn down one of the dormitories which was thwarted by the school admin.

Members of the public condemned the police and also the Baringo County fire brigade department for failing to act swiftly to save the situation.

The raging fire was only contained after boda boda operators teamed up with locals to put off the fire after the County fire engine arrived late and also started to develop a mechanical problem.

Baringo County CEC for Tourism Wesley Keitany condemned the incident, urging the students and also members of the public to remain calm as police continue with investigations.

Cases of students going on rampage and setting their school infrastructure on fire has been on the rise in the recent past country wide with the most recent case being Kabarnet, Kibilwoni and Malindi High Schools.
